4,4-Dimethylpentanoic acid is a reactive hydrocarbon solvent that is used in the production of acetic anhydride. It is also used as an additive to gasoline and other fuels. 4,4-Dimethylpentanoic acid reacts with carboxylates to produce peracids, which are strong acids. The reaction between 4,4-dimethylpentanoic acid and magnesium salt produces trimerization products such as dimethyltetrahydrofuran and methyl tetrahydrofuran.
