3-(2,4-Dioxo-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrimidin-1-yl)-propionic acid is a nucleic acid analog which has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the ribosomal RNA. The compound is also used as a contrast medium in x-ray crystallography studies. 3-(2,4-Dioxo-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrimidin-1-yl)-propionic acid has been shown to interact with adenine and uracil moieties in nucleic acids. The interaction between 3-(2,4-Dioxo-3,4-dihydro-2H -pyrimidin -1 -yl) propionic acid and an appropriate base produces a protonated form that can be detected by x ray diffraction analysis.
