1-[2-(Diphenylmethoxy)ethyl]piperazine (DPMP) is a centrally acting dopamine reuptake inhibitor. It has been shown to increase the extracellular levels of dopamine and serotonin in the rat striatum by blocking their reuptake, which may be due to its hydroxyl group. DPMP is also a long-acting depressant that can be used as a cough suppressant. It has been shown to have a potent antitussive effect in rats with bronchial hyperresponsiveness and suppress coughs caused by histamine or capsaicin. DPMP has been found to produce an antidepressant effect in mice at doses of 0.5-5 mg/kg and has been shown to inhibit dopamine uptake at doses of 10 mg/kg.END>
