1,2-Dimethyl-1H-imidazole-4-sulfonyl chloride is a derivatization agent for the separation of isomers. It is used to validate an analytical method by derivatizing the analyte with a reagent that can be detected and measured. This reagent may also be used in the detection sensitivity of an analyte. 1,2-Dimethyl-1H-imidazole-4-sulfonyl chloride is also used as a hydrolysis agent in the identification of estrogens. The reaction with estrogens produces two products, one of which is chromatographically detectable and can be quantified. 1,2-Dimethyl-1H-imidazole-4-sulfonyl chloride reacts with hydrogen peroxide to produce hydroxyl groups, which are then reacted with acetic anhydride to form acetates and chlorides.
