2,2-Dimethylchroman-4-ol is an aromatic alcohol that is used as a building block in the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals. This compound can be synthesized by catalyzing the reaction between benzaldehyde and toluene. 2,2-Dimethylchroman-4-ol can also be obtained from the fungus Cylindracea cinnamomea. It was shown to have antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger.
The enzyme lipase catalyzes the hydrolysis of 2,2-dimethylchroman-4-ol into vinyl acetate and vinyl alcohol. The enantiomeric purity of 2,2-dimethylchroman-4-ol has been determined to be 98% ee by chiral high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
