The mechanism for the formation of 2,5-dimethylquinolin-8-ol is unknown, but it may be due to the following two mechanisms:
1) 2,5-dimethylquinolin-8-ol may form from the reaction between methoxy and chloro groups in an aluminium salt. This reaction requires heat or light to proceed.
2) Dimeric 2,5 methyl quinoline can form from hydroxy quinoles by a thermal ring closure process. This reaction requires heat to proceed
