1-(3,4-Dimethoxybenzyl)-6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline hydroiodide (DMBI) is a synthetic immunomodulatory drug that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases. DMBI is an immunocompetent agent and has been shown to have prognostic value for certain diseases. DMBI binds to mannose residues on neutrophils and monocytes and may inhibit their function. It also inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as necrosis factor (TNF), which may have anti-inflammatory effects. DMBI is metabolized by dehydrogenases into 1-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-6,7-dimethoxy-2H-[1]benzopyran-2-one that can be measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The serum concentration
