Diethylcyanamide is a synthetic chemical that can be used as an organic solvent. It is exothermic and reacts with water to form hydrogen cyanide, which is toxic. Diethylcyanamide can be used in the synthesis of other organic compounds and has been shown to react with metal hydroxides, halides, and silicon. This compound has structural isomers that differ in the configuration at the central carbon atom. Diethylcyanamide also reacts with phosphorus pentachloride to form stable complexes.
