N,N-Dimethyl-2-oxopropanamide is a carbonyl compound that binds to sulfides. It can be used as a substrate to study the effect of conformational and electrostatic parameters on the substitution of sulfide with methyl groups or carbonyl oxygens. The tert-butyl substituent can also be removed by catalytic hydrogenation to yield enolates. N,N-Dimethyl-2-oxopropanamide has been shown to inhibit the formation of acetaldehyde from ethanol through its ability to bind to the carbonyl group.
