5,6-Dihydro-4H-pyrrolo[3,2,1-ij]quinoline-1,2-dione (DHPQ) is a five membered heterocycle that is generated in the presence of an acid catalyst. It can be prepared by reacting pyridine with an inorganic acid such as phosphoric acid or sulfuric acid. The lactam form of DHPQ can be generated by reacting the compound with an amine base such as methylamine or ethylamine. This molecule has been used in the synthesis of other heterocycles such as isatin and cyclopentene. DHPQ can also react to form polycyclic compounds with similar structures to benzene and naphthalene.
