6,8-Dichloro-3-formyl chromone is a potent inhibitor of HIV and has been shown to have anti-tumor activity in cell lines. It was found to be more potent than metronidazole against these cells. 6,8-Dichloro-3-formyl chromone has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase and inhibiting the synthesis of DNA. This compound is used as an antimicrobial agent, with a spectrum that includes gram negative and gram positive bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. This product can be synthesized from ethyl acetate or from elemental chromones.
