The dimethyl ester of 3,4-dihydroxy-thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid can be used as an additive in coatings to improve their properties such as adhesion and gloss. 3,4-Dihydroxy-thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester reacts with vinylene chloride to form a polymer that can be used as photovoltaic material.
