3,5-Dinitrotoluene is a chemical compound with the formula C6H2(NO2)3CH3. It is a yellow solid that is soluble in organic solvents such as acetone or chloroform. 3,5-Dinitrotoluene can be synthesized by reacting diethylene glycol with nitric acid and sulfuric acid. The product of this reaction has been shown to be a mixture of three isomers. The impurities found in this product have been identified as methyl sulfide, methyl sulfoxide, and methyl sulfone. This product contains high molecular weight molecules and impurities that can be removed with an experimentally determined method using nitrocellulose paper.
