2,2-Dichloroacetophenone (DDAP) is a chemical that is used as a disinfectant and has been shown to have cytotoxic effects. It has been shown to be selective for protein kinases and is effective against autophagy, which is the process of degrading cellular components. DDAP inhibits the growth of epidermal growth factor receptor by binding to its active site, preventing the formation of a complex with ATP. This prevents the activation of downstream signaling pathways that are important for cell proliferation. DDAP also inhibits the synthesis of proteins in mitochondria by acylation reaction with mitochondrial membrane proteins. DDAP also has been used in wastewater treatment as an alternative to chlorine and may act as a reactive oxygen species scavenger. The hydroxyl group on DDAP can form hydrogen bonds with electron deficient molecules such as cancer cells or epithelial cells, leading to apoptosis.
