2,6-Dichloro-4-methylnicotinic acid is an intermediate in the synthesis of aromatic amines and pharmaceuticals. It can be prepared by the reaction of 2,6-dichloro-4-methylphenol with sodium azide, followed by hydrolysis. This compound is used as a ligand for complexation with metal ions, such as Cu(II) or Fe(III). As a nucleophile it reacts with chloride to form 2,6-dichloro-4-chlorophenol.
2,6-Dichloro-4-methylnicotinic acid is used in the synthesis of dyestuffs and dyes. This compound also reacts with alkynes to produce aralkyl derivatives. Additionally, this synthon can react with pyridine to form an azide derivative.
