Product Information
- Benzoic Acid, 3,5-Dichloro-4-Methyl-
3,5-Dichloro-4-methylbenzoic acid is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and reacts with hydrochloric acid to form 3,5-dichlorobenzoic acid. It can be recrystallized from a sodium hydroxide solution. The compound has been used as an intermediate in the production of methyl esters and chlorinated benzenes.
3,5-Dichloro-4-methylbenzoic acid is prepared by introducing dry chlorine gas into a mixture of 3,5-dichlorobenzaldehyde and concentrated hydrochloric acid at room temperature. The reaction vessel is then cooled to 0°C and the chlorine gas flow is continued until the evolution of hydrogen chloride ceases.
