2,4-Dichlorobenzo[d]thiazole is a benzothiazolone compound that has been shown to form supramolecular complexes with alkali metal ions. This solvatochromic dye can be used as a stain for microscopy techniques. 2,4-Dichlorobenzo[d]thiazole is also fluorescent and can be used as a probe for cellular morphology or fluorescence techniques. The compound has been characterized by X-ray crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It may also have potential applications in the detection of hydrochloric acid in mammalian cells, which could prove useful in the diagnosis of stomach ulcers.
