Diethyl 2-oxopropylphosphonate (DEP) is an aliphatic methylating agent that reacts with nucleophilic groups on the cell surface. It is a highly reactive chemical, which can cause adverse reactions in cells including necrosis and cytotoxicity, as well as induce DNA damage. DEP has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of leukemia cells, but not of normal cells. This agent also has fatty acid methylating properties and can be used to produce a variety of amines.
