(4,4'-Di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine)bis[(2-pyridinyl)phenyl]iridium(III) Hexafluorophosphate (Ir(bpy)(PF6)) is a metal complex that has been studied for use as an efficient photocatalyst for the photoinduced oxidative cyclization of styrenes to carbazoles. Ir(bpy)(PF6) is a four electron oxidizing agent that transfers electrons from one molecule to another. In the presence of oxygen, Ir(bpy)(PF6) can oxidize styrene to styrene oxide. Ir(bpy)(PF6) can be used in aerobic environments or in the absence of oxygen by using water as an electron donor.
