3,4-Dimethyl-5-nitroaniline is a reductive amination agent that can be used to prepare acrylamide and acrylic acid. It has been shown to reduce nitrobenzene to aniline in the presence of potassium hydroxide with hydrogen gas in the presence of light. 3,4-Dimethyl-5-nitroaniline is also able to reduce a number of other aromatic compounds, including substituted benzene derivatives such as nitrotoluene and phenols. Reduction potentials for 3,4-Dimethyl-5-nitroaniline are -0.07 volts for the one electron reduction and -0.36 volts for the two electron reduction. 3,4-Dimethyl-5-nitroaniline has been shown to have a redox potential of 0.00 volts
