3,6-Dichlorophthalicanhydride is a polyolefin monomer that is synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts acylation of chloroform with phthalic anhydride. The 3,6-dichlorophthalicanhydride molecule has an anion radical and anion and can reversibly bind chloride ions. This compound has been shown to be photoreduced to form carbonyl groups in the presence of a catalyst, such as a transition metal ion. Carbonyl groups can be used in the synthesis of polyesters or polyurethanes. 3,6-Dichlorophthalicanhydride also reacts with diethyl ester to form n-oxide compounds.
