1,6-Dimethyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole is a coenzyme that is needed for the synthesis of corrinoids in anaerobic bacteria. It is also a cofactor for glutamate dehydrogenase in the Krebs cycle and for butyrate kinase in the butyrate oxidation pathway. 1,6-Dimethyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole has been postulated to be a vitamin B12 precursor. In culture media, 1,6-Dimethyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole can be converted to cobalamin by cobaltous chloride.
