2,4-Dibromobenzaldehyde is a brominated aromatic aldehyde that is used to produce organogels. It can be synthesized by the reaction of phenyl bromide with 2,4-dichlorobenzaldehyde in the presence of organogelators such as quinoline derivatives and hydrochloric acid. The gelation process is initiated by uv irradiation or an acid catalyst. This compound has been shown to be biomolecular and can be used in the study of amino acids, proteins, and nucleic acids. 2,4-Dibromobenzaldehyde can also be used as an electron acceptor for chemical oxidation reactions.
