1,9-Dihydro-9-methyl-6H-purin-6-one is a prodrug that is converted to the active form, 6-mercaptopurine by acidic hydrolysis. It is used in the clinical treatment of leukemia and lymphoma. The reaction of 1,9-dihydro-9-methyl-6H -purin-6 one with chloride ions yields the corresponding chloride salt, which can be detected by magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The reaction also produces hydrogen gas and water as reaction products. In addition to these properties, 1,9 -dihydro - 9 methyl - 6 H - purin - 6 one is a molecule that has two tautomers: keto and enol. This drug binds to metal ions through the oxygen atoms in its keto form or the nitrogen atom in its enol form.
