Beta,beta-dimethylacrylalkannin (DMAA) is a natural compound that has been shown to be cytotoxic to leukemia cells in vitro. DMAA is a diterpene that belongs to the naphthoquinone class of compounds. It damages DNA by inhibiting topoisomerase I and II, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of DNA. DMAA can also inhibit DNA synthesis and cause strand breakage. DMAA inhibits topoisomerase I and II in both human leukemia cells and Escherichia coli. The cytotoxicity of this compound has been demonstrated in vitro at nanomolar concentrations.
