- 2,6-Dichloro-4-nitrotoluene
1,3-Dichloro-2-methyl-5-nitrobenzene is a chiral reagent used for the preparation of α-chloroamino acids. It is prepared by chlorinating 1,3-dichlorobenzene with a mixture of chlorine and methyl chloride in the presence of an acidic catalyst. This reaction yields a mixture of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid and 1,3-dichloro-2,5-dimethylaniline. The methyl group can be removed by catalyzed hydrogenation to give 1,3-dichloro-2-methylbenzene. The compound crystallizes from ether in needles that melt at 110°C and boils at 190°C.
