2,3-Dimethoxy-1,4-naphthalenedione (DMN) is a naturally occurring compound that is used as a metabolic probe in vivo. DMN has been shown to be an inhibitor of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and to cause cell lysis. DMN has also been found to induce apoptosis in HL60 cells by decreasing the mitochondrial membrane potential and releasing reactive oxygen species. This compound also causes oxidative injury by inhibiting basic protein metabolism and disrupting the electron transport chain. DMN may be used to study the metabolic effects of cancer therapy or as a chemotherapeutic agent for cancer treatment.
