Dansyl glutathione is a reactive chemical that is structurally similar to glutathione. It can be used to detect drugs and other chemicals in the liver by measuring their reaction with the sulfhydryl group of glutathione. Disulfide bonds are formed when drugs are metabolized, causing an increase in the level of Dansyl glutathione. Drug interactions may occur if Dansyl glutathione reacts with another drug that has a disulfide bond. The use of this compound as an estrogen receptor modulator has been studied, but no conclusions have been made to date. Dansyl glutathione is also being studied as a potential antidiabetic agent because it prevents the oxidation of glucose in the liver and stimulates insulin production from pancreatic cells.
