2,4-Dihydroxybenzyl alcohol is an epoxide with a molecular weight of 76.1. It is synthesized from benzene and resorcinol by the reaction of these two substances with heat and acid catalysts. The 2,4-dihydroxybenzyl alcohol has low viscosity and yields high molecular weights when polymerized or reacted with other monomers. This product can be used as a coating for paperboard, wood, metal, textiles, plastics, and paints to prevent water damage.
