1,4-Dihydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene is an organic compound that is the product of the ring-opening reaction of 2,6-dichlorobenzaldehyde. It has pesticidal properties that are due to its ability to oxidize and alkylate DNA. 1,4-Dihydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene can be synthesized by a number of methods including direct oxidation with nitric acid and chlorination with chlorine or carbon tetrachloride. This compound can also be synthesized in high yield by transfer reactions from sodium chloride or c1-6 alkyl chloride with carbon tetrachloride and c1-4 alkyl chloride, respectively.
