3,4-Dimethylaniline-6-sulfonic acid is a cation with a strong affinity for anions. It can be synthesized by the sulfonation of 3,4-dimethylaniline using chlorosulfonic acid and sodium hydroxide as reagents. The monohydrate form can be obtained by crystallization from water. The two-dimensional structures of 3,4-dimethylaniline-6-sulfonic acid were investigated by X-ray crystallography. Hydrogen bonding interactions between the sulfonate group and the ammonium group are found to be essential for the stability of this compound's structure. This molecule has been used as a ligand in coordination chemistry and as an amine catalyst in organic synthesis procedures.
