- 5-Benzofuranpropanoic acid, 2,3-dihydro-
3-(2,3-Dihydrobenzofuran-5-yl)propanoicacid (BDPPA) is a benzene derivative that is used in the production of acrylic acid. It can be synthesized by reacting benzaldehyde with propionic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst such as hydrochloric acid to produce the desired product. The reaction conditions are investigated and high yields are obtained with catalytic amounts of aluminum chloride or zinc chloride. This compound can also be synthesized by methyl esterification of 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-5-carboxylic acid with methanol and ethyl acetate. BDPPA has a cyclic structure and can react with carbonyl groups to form acetals. Acetals have been shown to be useful for investigating the properties of polymers, such as polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, and polycarbonates.
