5,7-Dinitrooxindole is an oxindole that has been synthesized by the ring-opening of hydroxylated triazoles. It has a hydrophobic character due to the presence of two nitro groups in the molecule. This compound can be used as a synthetic precursor for other compounds with biological activity. 5,7-Dinitrooxindole can be oxidized with hydroxide ions to yield 7-hydroxy-5,6-dinitrooxindole, which is an optical isomer of the molecule. The conformation of 5,7-dinitrooxindole can be transferred to other molecules using amines and cyclic sulfoxides.
