3,3'-Dihexyloxacarbocyanineiodide is a chemical inhibitor of apoptosis. It binds to the mitochondrial membrane and blocks the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into the cytosol, which prevents activation of caspase-9 and -3. The inhibition of these enzymes leads to decreased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protein oxidation, which induces apoptosis. 3,3'-Dihexyloxacarbocyanineiodide has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on proliferation in human squamous cell carcinoma cells. It also inhibits DNA synthesis in hl-60 cells by binding to nuclear DNA. 3,3'-Dihexyloxacarbocyanineiodide also binds to Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which is expressed at high levels in certain cancerous cells such as HL60 cells.
