3-Dimethylaminopyridine is a monosubstituted heterocyclic compound with hydrogen-bonding capability. The shift of the NMR spectrum due to the presence of deuterium oxide can be used to identify the presence of 3-dimethylaminopyridine. Protonation of 3-dimethylaminopyridine leads to resonance structures, which are seen in the nmr spectra. This resonance is caused by substituent effects and results in a number of possible structures that depend on the substitution pattern. Analysis of these nmr spectra can be used to determine the structure of 3-dimethylaminopyridine.
