2,6-Dimethoxynicotinic acid is a potent inhibitor of topoisomerase II. It is able to inhibit the growth of a variety of tumour cell lines in vitro and has shown anticancer activity in vivo. The cytotoxic effects are believed to be due to inhibition of DNA synthesis and repair. 2,6-Dimethoxynicotinic acid inhibits cancer cells by preventing their uptake into tissues and by inhibiting the growth of lung cells. This drug targets myelogenous leukaemia cells and has been shown to have anti-tuberculosis activity. In vitro studies have shown that 2,6-dimethoxynicotinic acid is more effective than other inhibitors against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
