2,3'-Dichloroacetophenone is a chemical that has been shown to have antiproliferative effects in vitro. It inhibits the growth of acidophilum by binding to the enzyme enantioselective hydrolysis of acetophenone. The optimal reaction conditions for this process are attained at pH 5 and a chloride concentration of 1.0 M. This compound is synthesized from 2,4-dichlorobenzaldehyde and sodium hydroxide in an organic solvent with an enantiopure starting material. The sequence of reactions involves a condensation reaction, followed by hydrolysis and chlorination. The enantiopures are prepared by carrying out the synthesis on a racemic mixture of 2,4-dichlorobenzaldehyde with an excess of one enantiomer of sodium hydroxide.
