4,6-Dimethyl-7-ethylaminocoumarin (4,6-DEMC) is an oxime derivative that has been used as a fluorescent probe for the detection of aromatic amines and other compounds. 4,6-DEMC reacts with amines to form a covalent bond and quenches fluorescence. It is also capable of reacting with nucleophilic agents such as hydroxide ion, which can be generated from water by irradiation with ultraviolet light or from ionizing radiation. This reaction causes the emission of blue light (λmax = 393nm) and allows for the detection of amines in acidic environments. 4,6-DEMC can be used to detect nitrites in acidic environments by reacting with nitric oxide to form nitrosamines.
