Description:
2,5-Dimethylfuran-3-thiol is a conjugate of the thiol compound 2,5-dimethylfuran and the amino acid cysteine. The 2,5-dimethylfuran moiety is an electron donor and the cysteine moiety is an electron acceptor. In addition to being a potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation, it has also been shown to be an effective antiplatelet agent in vivo. It can be used as an additive in foods with organoleptic properties such as cinnamon oil or clove oil. This molecule binds to human liver cells with high affinity and prevents the oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.
