3,3'-Dipropyloxacarbocyanineiodide is a fluorescent dye that is used in microscopy to study the extracellular environment. It has been shown to stain muscle tissue, and has fluorescence properties that are dependent on the local pH. 3,3'-Dipropyloxacarbocyanineiodide can be used as a probe for hyperpolarized 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and can be used to measure ion concentrations in living cells. This dye also has been shown to bind with 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) and show physiological effects in cells.
