Dichloro(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)ruthenium(III)polymer (CPCP) is a macrolactonization polymer that has anticancer activity. It is synthesized by the reaction of dichloro(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)ruthenium(III) with different alkyl halides and can be functionalized with hydroxyl groups, resulting in an anticancer drug. CPCP is a convergent synthesis of macrolide antibiotics, which have been shown to have anticancer properties. The coupling reaction between the ruthenium atom and the alkyne group on the polymer backbone results in a high degree of conjugation, which has been shown to increase the antimicrobial potency of polymers.
