Description

6,7-Dimethoxy-1-tetralone (DMTO) is a cytotoxic compound that inhibits bacterial topoisomerase. DMTO has been shown to be effective against staphylococcus and other bacteria as well as some fungi. DMTO is a postulated antibacterial agent that may work by binding to the active site of bacterial enzymes. DMTO also has an effect on bacterial DNA, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis by binding to the enzyme DNA gyrase. The antibacterial activity of DMTO is thought to be due to its ability to bind the chloride ion and form a chloride complex with hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) and other solvents. This complex may cause cell death by dehydration or evaporation of water from the bacterial cell membrane, leading to cell lysis.
