- 4-Methyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carbonitrile
- 2-Hydroxy-4-methylpyridine-3-carbonitrile
1,2-Dihydro-4-methyl-2-oxo-3-pyridinecarbonitrile (1) is a synthon that can be used in the synthesis of nevirapine and oxychloride. It contains an active methylene group which is accessible for substitution reactions. 1,2-Dihydro-4-methyl-2-oxo-3-pyridinecarbonitrile can be synthesized by amide formation between cyanoacetamide (2) and an isopropyl Grignard reagent (3). This reaction yields a molecule containing a pyridine ring. The industrial process involves the use of sodium hypochlorite to oxidize 1 to 2.
