4-(Dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(julolidin-4-yl-vinyl)-4H-pyran is a fluorescent dye that can be used to study the interactions between molecules. This dye has been shown to be nonfluorescent in the absence of light, but when excited by light, it emits red fluorescence. The efficiency of this molecule as a fluorophore depends on the number of layers, with greater efficiencies achieved for multilayer films. 4-(Dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(julolidin-4-yl-vinyl)-4H-pyran is also sensitive to population density and morphology of cells, which can be detected using fluorescence microscopy.
