5,6-Dichlorobenzimidazole (5,6-DCB) is a benzimidazole compound that has been used in pharmaceutical preparations and for sample preparation. It is a potent inhibitor of cyclin D2, which is a protein that regulates the cell cycle. 5,6-DCB has also been shown to inhibit the synthesis of casein and collagen by binding to the active sites of enzymes involved in these processes. 5,6-DCB also inhibits virus replication by inhibiting protein transport into the nucleus. The high affinity of 5,6-DCB for benzimidazole compounds may account for its ability to bind to other proteins such as growth factor.
