2,2-Dimethylvaleroylchloride is a colorless liquid with a pleasant odor. It has been used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. The molecule consists of two enantiopure alcohols, one of which is a 2-methylvaleryl group. The heterocycle is prochiral and can exist in two different configurations depending on the substituents at the carbon atoms adjacent to the carbonyl group. This compound is useful for the synthesis of mononuclear heterocycles and can be converted into chlorides or other acid chlorides by treatment with thionyl chloride or phosphorus pentachloride.
2,2-Dimethylvaleroylchloride has been found in leaves and relictual coniferous wood from North America, such as Picea engelmannii (Engelmann spruce). This compound also occurs in certain species of Germacrene and Monoterpene.
