2,4-Dichlorobenzoylperoxide is a prodrug that is metabolized to 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid, which has pharmacological effects. It is used in the treatment of metabolic disorders such as glycol ester accumulation and high resistance to dimethyl fumarate. 2,4-Dichlorobenzoylperoxide inhibits the synthesis of nitric oxide by reacting with nitrogen atoms in cells. Nitric oxide production is important for cellular function and a lack of it leads to impaired locomotor activity, decreased water vapor absorption and h3 acetylation. 2,4-Dichlorobenzoylperoxide also reacts with silicone molecules to produce cell factor. Cell factor is an inflammatory agent that can lead to bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
