3,4-Dihydroxypyridine is a substrate that binds to the enzyme aryl-chloride hydroxylase and is converted to 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. This reaction results in an increase of the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) and ATP. 3,4-Dihydroxypyridine has been shown to act as an inhibitor of HIV by blocking protein synthesis. It inhibits the conversion of glucose into lactic acid, reducing the pH level in cells. The pH level in cells is crucial for cell survival and can be used as a therapeutic target for cancer treatment. 3,4-Dihydroxypyridine also inhibits protein synthesis for bacteria such as leucaena or suzuki coupling reaction. This compound has been shown to have an effective dose at 0.1mg/kg body weight when injected intraperitoneally in mice.
