Dimethyl amine is a colorless, volatile liquid with a strong ammonia-like odor. It has a low energy content and is soluble in water. Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) is used as a pharmaceutical drug to treat disorders of the central nervous system, such as epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease. DMAE can also be used to help treat herpes simplex virus infections. The mechanism of action for this drug is not well understood, but it may work by blocking the transport of glutamate into cells. Dimethylaminoethanol may also inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids or react with amines to form nitrosamines that are carcinogenic.
