2,6-Dimethylanisole is a hydrogen bond acceptor that reacts with an acid to produce a salt and water. It can also form the corresponding acid chloride by reacting with hydrogen chloride. The reaction mechanism for this reaction is nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon of 2,6-dimethylanisole. This compound has been shown to be toxic to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and murine leukemia in vitro. It has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in culture by blocking their DNA synthesis. 2,6-Dimethylanisole has a molecular weight of 208.22 g/mol, a boiling point of 275 °C at 760 mmHg, and a density of 1.05 g/mL at 20 °C.
